Between the 19th and the 20th of October, the Gothenburg Arab Film Days are back in town for its fifth edition. This year, the film days will take place in three different venues in parallel: Bio Roy, Folkets Hus Hammarkullen and Tollered cinema. The objective is to make contemporary Arabic cinema available to a broad and varied audience across the Gothenburg and Västra Götaland region. All the films have subtitles in either English or Swedish.
This year’s edition starts off on the 19th of October at the cinema Bio Roy with the critically acclaimed and Oscar nominated film The Man Who Sold His Skin by Tunisian director Kaouther Ben Hania. The film’s Swedish co-producer Andreas Rocksén will present the film to the audience. The programme then continues with a fine selection of Arab features, documentaries and shorts, from Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon. Apart from the screenings, the public will also be invited to take part in festive mingles before the inauguration screening at Bio Roy and in between screenings in Hammarkullen.
Gothenburg Arab Film Days will have the pleasure of hosting a number of international guests, including Oualid Mouaness, the director behind the Lebanese film 1982, that tells the story of an ordinary day at a school outside of Beirut, while war , and Asmae El Moudir, who in The Postcard portrays the isolated village in the Moroccan Atlas mountains where her mother was born. Several other directors and producers will also be present during the film days to meet the audience.
Gothenburg Arab Film Days is organised by Malmö Arab Film Festival (MAFF), with the generous support of the City of Gothenburg, the Västra Götaland region and the Swedish Film Institute. Since its establishment in 2011, MAFF has developed into the largest and the leading film festival specialised in Arab cinema in Europe.
